Welcome to day 35 of the 365 day poem challenge.
Word of the day gloaming meaning "twilight;dusk."
The Cave
He wandered into the cave
Backlit with a light that
Called to mind his most
Primordial fears
The wind that swept
Past his straight brown hair
Sounded like the tongue
Of a nightmare
Whispering "do not enter"
Echoing his parents
Who will I be, his elder self
Pondered inside
The ego and superego
Debating today was for his id
Steps reverberated
Down down down
Stalagmites deep pools
Pot holes and crevasses
That whistled up the earths secrets
He lay down on the floor
And closed his eyes
His chest constricted
At the thought that the ceiling
Might swallow him up
He panted
Darkness only darkness
This was the moment
Where he returned to nothing
This was the moment
When he realised his end
It tickled the ends of his toes
It kissed his forehead
It was gentler than he expected
Then finally
When the cave had worn
Itself out
He emerged into the gloaming
His skin glistened
Like an ember ghost
Dancing in the sparkling twilight.
